World Water Day 2025: Preserving Glaciers for Our Future
World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22nd to highlight the importance of freshwater, raise awareness of the global water crisis, and inspire action towards sustainable water management. Established by the United Nations in 1993, this observance focuses on advancing Sustainable Development Goal 6: ensuring water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Each year, UN-Water sets a theme to address a critical water-related issue. For 2025, the theme is Glacier Preservation — a call to protect the planet's "frozen reservoirs" that play a crucial role in regulating the Earth's water cycle.
Why Focus on Glacier Preservation?
Glaciers — rivers of ice slowly flowing from mountain peaks — are vital for freshwater supply. They provide drinking water, support agriculture, generate clean energy, and maintain ecosystem health. By reflecting solar radiation, glaciers also help cool the Earth and stabilize the climate.
However, glaciers are melting faster than ever due to climate change. Rising global temperatures shorten winters and extend summers, causing:
Unpredictable water cycles — affecting water availability for billions of people.
Natural disasters — including floods, droughts, landslides, and rising sea levels.
Ecosystem disruption — damaging habitats and biodiversity.
Protecting glaciers is not just about saving ice — it’s a survival strategy for people and the planet.

How Can You Get Involved?
No matter where you live, you can join the World Water Day 2025 campaign and contribute to glacier preservation. There are three main ways to take action:
🌏 Learn
Explore how glaciers influence the water cycle and climate.
Read the 2025 UN World Water Development Report.
Check your country’s water and sanitation data on the SDG 6 Data Portal.
📢 Share
Use #WorldWaterDay on social media to spark conversations about glacier preservation.
Access editable campaign materials on the World Water Day Trello board.
If you're working on climate change or glacier-related projects, email campaigns@unwater.org to collaborate.
⚡ Act
Create art, songs, or short films inspired by glaciers and water.
Organize photo contests, exhibitions, or mountain walks to witness glacier-fed rivers.
Give a talk at your school, office, or community event.
Host sports events, concerts, or environmental clean-ups.
Support citizen science projects that collect data on local water sources.
🌿 Join the BWT x Windhager Best Water Run — For You and Planet Blue
This year, we are excited to announce that, once again, we are organizing the 6 km run — now for the first time in collaboration with Windhager — under the name:
BWT x Windhager Best Water Run — For You and Planet Blue.

The event aims to raise awareness abut the struggles many people face in accessing clean drinking water and to raise funds for building water wells, changing lives forever. Stay updated for more news from BWT and be part of this impactful movement!
Water is life — and glaciers are an essential part of the global water system. By taking action this World Water Day 2025, you help protect these natural wonders, support sustainable water management, and push for stronger climate adaptation strategies. Together, we can turn awareness into action and ensure a future where both people and the planet thrive.
